Patients Expect ‘Self-service’ Registration Capabilities

January 24, 2017

Medfusion’s Patient Self-Scheduling Product Manager, Ryan Stutzman, was quoted in an article in Hospital Access Management on patient engagement. Read his statement below:

Ryan Stutzman, product manager for patient self-scheduling at Medfusion, a Cary, NC based healthcare IT company, says, “In the near future, we will see patients taking a much more active role in all aspects of their healthcare. Mobile technology will be a key driver.” Five years from now, he predicts, registrars will know when a patient has arrived and collect payments — all from the patient’s mobile device. “This will happen without ever calling a name, collecting a form, or swiping a credit card,” Stutzman says. Ironically, one of the main obstacles to “self-service” in patient access is the sheer number of technology solutions available. “Many front-desk administrators see each new popular tech tool as just another system to manage, screen to log on to, or thing that can break,”
Stutzman explains. Solutions don’t “talk” to one another. “Once the problem of interoperability is solved, we will see mobile technology transform healthcare, in the same way it has almost every other industry,” Stutzman says.

Data Avalanche Requires Context, Standards

September 30, 2014

If properly managed, information culled from mobile devices can reshape health care.

In a 2013 Health Affairs policy briefing, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation concluded that a growing body of evidence demonstrates that patients who are more actively involved in their health care experience better health outcomes and incur lower costs.

It is perhaps, then, no surprise that a top priority for the vast majority of health system leaders nationwide is to boost patient engagement.2 While patient engagement comes in many forms, one newer method currently exploding in popularity is patients using wearable devices or smartphone applications to monitor their physical fitness and other health behaviors. In fact, according to Juniper Research, the smart, wearable device market is expected to reach $19 billion by 2018, up from only $1.4 billion in 2013.

Three ways providers should engage the healthcare consumer

September 3, 2014

Consumerism is taking hold in healthcare

A wave of consumerism is taking hold in healthcare, affecting provider-patient
relationships across the country. Escalating health plan deductibles, the Affordable Care Act’s insurance marketplaces, and most importantly, advances in information technology are causing patients to think more like consumers in regards to how and where their healthcare dollars are spent and if they’re truly receiving value for their money.

Providers must embrace this shifting dynamic and move beyond the traditional provider-patient relationship to ensure patient commitment and loyalty. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation concluded in a 2013 policy brief published in Health Affairs that “a growing body of evidence demonstrates that patients who are more actively involved in their healthcare experience better health outcomes and incur lower costs.”

Patient portals create interoperability puzzles

August 31, 2014

How mobile operating systems, EHR vendor interaction and health system implementations complicate patient portal interoperability.

KSF Orthopedic Center was an early adopter of patient portal technology, the patient-to-doctor communication programs that are at the heart of the nationwide push toward electronic healthcare systems and bedrock for ONC’s patient engagement initiatives driven by meaningful use.

When KSF installed its first patient portal three years ago, the program was called “Medfusion,” the brainchild of North Carolina entrepreneur Steve Malik. But soon Malik sold the company to digital consumer finance software giant Intuit Inc., which renamed the portal “Intuit Health” as it grew and developed its features and interface.

Is healthcare really ready for consumerization?

August 7, 2014

The evolution of technology in the healthcare industry over the past 30 years has occurred in three distinct waves.

The first, a financial wave, was facilitated by the industry’s adoption of payer and provider IT solutions to speed billing and reimbursement. Clinical in nature, the second wave introduced electronic health records (EHRs) and new delivery system models initiated to address problems and failures from the first wave.

Now, the industry is entering wave three – consumerization – focused on areas such as wellness, patient engagement,
and personalized medicine. This wave, like the other two, has also been facilitated by health IT, specifically the massive
consumer adoption of smartphones and mobile fitness and health monitoring devices. Through this technology, consumers
are managing their chronic conditions using interactive apps and other integrated biometric devices, which has led to an
increasing desire to communicate and receive personal health data from their providers whenever and wherever they choose.

Patients’ demand for digital communication will continue to increase

July 28, 2014

When was the last time you purchased an airline ticket by calling a carrier or paid a monthly bill with a paper check? In the past two decades, companies from the nation’s largest industries—financial, retail, travel and real estate—have invested significantly in online technology to connect with their customers and conduct transactions.

Healthcare has only just begun the journey in boosting its digital communication and transactions with patients. Part of the reluctance has been concern about the disruption to staff and provider workflows, perceived lack of interest by patients, absence of incentives from payers and overall security concern.

Patient Portals: Privacy Vs. Convenience

February 7, 2014

Patient portals promise efficiency and convenience, a solid way for healthcare professional to communicate, and a gateway for patients to follow their own medical history. Patient portals have become much more commonplace under the Meaningful Use Incentive Program, which breaks patient engagement into two stages. Stage 1 requires providers offer electronic copies of test results, discharge summaries, and the like when the patient requests it. Stage 2 goes further by requiring physicians offer online access of medical records to more than 50 percent of unique patients seen by clinicians.
